Its all in a Name

Sherwood Changes Its Name
Since the beginning of October 2007 there have been a number of changes at Sherwood Commercial Vehicles, not least the change of name to ‘Sherwood Truck & Van’. We felt that the new name and corresponding logo promotes a more focussed and fresher image that sits in line with the many changes within the industry and our company today.
In addition, congratulations go to Paul Hemp who took on the role of Managing Director. Paul began working with Sherwood 28 years ago as the Parts Manager, and rose through the ranks to Operations Director, a role which he held for over 15 years.
Another development has been the introduction of a new computer system, which is a fully integrated dealer software solution. It will allow Sherwood to be more responsive with information and improve our ability to meet customer demands in all areas of the business, whether it be vehicles sales, service, parts or bodyshop.
Finally to support all these changes, we have recently launched a new website, where customers can find out all they need to know about Fiat commercial and Iveco vehicle models, the latest available used vehicles, vehicle after-sales and current promotions. To find out more, visit www.sherwoodtruckandvan.com.

Fiat Comes To Sherwood

FIAT FITS THE BILL FOR SMALL BUSINESSES IN NOTTINGHAM
New franchise for Sherwood offers best deal on service and back-up
If your car breaks down, you can expect to wait a few days before it’s fixed. Inconvenient, yes. But if it happens to a vehicle you use for business, it’s a disaster – especially if that business relies on just one van. The answer? You’re
better off buying from a commercial-vehicle dealer rather than a car dealer – that’s the advice from van and truck specialists Sherwood
The best-known name for trucks and vans throughout the East Midlands, Sherwood recently established a Fiat van dealership at their Nottingham depot and are keen to stress the level of customer support they can offer – such as
24-hour service.
“Most car dealers are open 8am to 5.30pm, and are often closed at weekends,” says sales executive Jordan Hill.
“At Sherwood, you can drop your vehicle off on a Tuesday night and it’ll be serviced and back on the road ready to be picked up on Wednesday morning.”
And it’s not just the speed of service that’s an advantage, as Sherwood’s operations manager Brian Robinson explains:
“If customers buy a commercial vehicle from a car dealer, they don’t get the back-up and parts availability,” says Brian.
“With us you can also get all the livery done when you buy the vehicle. It’s a one-stop shop; no other Fiat dealer in the region would have that facility.”
Designed for maximum cost-effectiveness, particularly with regard to payload, the four Fiat van models sold from Sherwood’s Nottingham site – the Punto, Doblo, Scudo and Ducato – are of particular interest to small companies and
‘one-man bands’ such as builders, labourers, painters and decorators. They also add to Sherwood’s growing reputation as a well-established dealership, with their line-up of vehicles now ranging from the very small – such as the Punto – to the
very large... up to 40-tonne tractor units.

Pele Comes To Sheffield!

            Sheffield FC turn 150!
Sheffield FC are the oldest Football Club in the world and have recently celebrated their 150th Birthday with a little help from Sherwood Truck and Van, Inter Milan and the Great Pele!
It was a bitterly cold night in early November and Bramhall Lane was the host for a very special event. Inter Milan had come over to play Sheffield FC as they celebrated their 150th Birthday.
Sherwood Truck and Van Ltd were only too happy to contribute to the celebrations by sponsoring the Match-ball. John Howley, Sherwood\'s After Sales Manager at our Sheffield Dealership said
" It was a pleasure to sponsor the match-ball for such a prestigious game."
Inter Milan, who coinsidentally celebrate their own centinary next year, were very much in the party spirit and ended up beating the home side 5-2. This didn\'t dampen the spirit of the occasion as the legendary Pele was on hand to keep the players spirits up.
Sheffield\'s two goals came from Rob Ward, a close range header after Italy\' World Cup star Marco Materazzi had conceded a foul. The second was from Stewart Copnell.
A good night was had by all and Sherwood Truck and Van were both honoured and humbled to be sharing such a remarkable landmark with the club.

Thorntons Grow Stralis Fleet

\'Chocs Away\' as Sherwood Deliver in Time for Christmas

It\'s usually Santa and his sleigh bringing chocolates for the world\'s sweet tooths at Christmas, but a growing fleet of Iveco Stralis trucks is fast taking up the challenge.
World famous chocolatiers Thorntons are now set to distribute their unique brand of Christmas cheer in style after taking delivery of five new Stralis trucks from neighbouring Derbyshire-based Sherwood Truck and Van Ltd. Thorntons\' tight Christmas delivery schedule provided a tough challenge for Sherwood, but they\'ve managed to supply the trucks in the nick of time, much to the delight of all at Thorntons...and chocoholics everywhere!
The new 57-plate vehicles are an addition to Thorntons\' existing fleet of Sherwood-supplied Stralis trucks, taking the total number to eleven. And for Thorntons Transport Manager Dr Tim Swan, sticking with the Stralis was never in question.
"We had 52-plate Stralis trucks when I first started at Thorntons, and two years ago I ordered four more," he explains. "We consulted the drivers and they really like them; the cabs are spacious and they have a great gearbox. So it was a simple choice really, and we ordered a further five. They offer great longevity; you certainly get a lot of truck for your money."
Tim was equally impressed with Sherwood\'s ability to pull out all the stops to ensure the trucks were deliverd in time for the Christmas rush.

"They did very well," explains Tim. "I really can\'t fault the service provided by Sherwood."
Sherwood\'s Simon Makin is delighted Thorntons have returned to expand their fleet, but not suprised.
"These tractor units offer loads of space, a high specification within the cab and a comfortable ride for the driver," Simon explains. "There\'s also the added bonus od incredible fuel economy, which has become vital with diesel prices on the increase.
"Most importantly, though, I believe we offer a service that\'s second to none, and we\'ve proved that by delivering the trucks to Thorntons in time for the most important period of the year."

30 Years Old ! ! !

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHERWOOD

East Midland dealership celebrates after three decades at the forefront of the truck industry....

Champagne corks are popping across the east Midlands, as one of the largest and most successful truck dealerships
in the country reaches the grand old age of 30 this month. And what a story it is. From humble beginnings,
Sherwood Truck and Van has grown and grown, providing a fascinating journey for everyone involved.
It was on May 1st 1978 that Sherwood was born, when current chairman Terry Waterfall established a DAF
dealership at a small site in Underwood, Nottinghamshire. “Back then it was a division of a PLC,” explains Terry.
“We had seven members of staff, plus myself, and I can still remember the first vehicle we sold – a DAF 2000 grey
tractor unit, which went to an operator in Newark. I think the value was £15,000. I can remember celebrating with
the staff, too, with a glass of champagne. In fact, every time we sold a truck we went to the pub and celebrated!”
It was a huge achievement at the time; DAF was a relatively unknown brand in the UK. But it was a sign of things to
come. “In our first year I believe we sold 30 vehicles, whereas today we’ll sell over 1,000 a year.Watching Sherwood
grow as a business has been very satisfying, but sometimes worrying too...”
In 1984, the company was acquired via a management buyout by Terry and his business partner Frank Holmes.
Under their guidance, Sherwood experienced rapid growth throughout the late Eighties, and in the wake of the
Leyland DAF merger it became the franchised Leyland DAF dealer for Nottinghamshire. It was during this time that
Sherwood acquired Kirby Trucks of Sheffield – the Leyland DAF dealer for south Yorkshire. But drama was to follow.
In February 1993, following the much published financial collapse of the Leyland DAF organisation, the Board of
Directors pursued an opportunity with another leading truck manufacturer. And after successful negotiations with
Iveco Ford Truck Ltd – now IVECO – the Sherwood Group, as it had become, was awarded main franchise status for
Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and south Yorkshire. Five years later, Sherwood completed its fourth acquisition with
the purchase of Chatfields of Stoke, covering Staffordshire and south Cheshire. And they did so as one of the leading
players in the UK market, having not long scooped a prestigious award in one of the company’s proudest moments.
“After we changed manufacturer from DAF to Iveco, we went on to win Truck Dealer of the Year in 1997,” explains
Terry, proudly. “The award was presented to me by Jill Dando at The Grosvenor Hotel in London.”

As the company grew, of course, so did the product. Over the last three decades, there have been some amazing
changes in the industry, not least with the vehicles themselves. “Thirty years ago, a truck driver would have had a
strenuous manual task to shift the gears and operate the heavy and not-too-efficient brakes,” Terry recalls. “He’d be
lucky if he had a heated cab, while sleeper cabs were just beginning to come on the market with the provision of a
fold-down bunk.
“These days a modern truck driver has the benefit of heating and air conditioning – even when the engine isn’t
running – well-insulated cabs, automatic transmission, a comfortable bunk bed area with curtains, a high-quality
stereo radio and, in some cases, tv, and of course, phone and satellite navigation.
“Computer technology also plays a major role in how a modern truck operates. Back then you’d listen to an engine
through a stethoscope or down the blade of a screwdriver to try and diagnose problems. Now, modern vehicles are
hooked up to a computer which provides the diagnosis.”
Like all businesses, Sherwood has had its share of ups and downs over the years, but it remains the market leader for
truck sales and service in the region, and boasts an impeccable reputation. So what’s the secret to Sherwood’s longevity?
“My background was as a service manager in a large commercial vehicle workshop and then as fleet engineer for a
commercial vehicle fleet,” Terry reveals. “Also, I was brought up in transport. My father had been in the industry all
his life, so I was aware of the demands of an operator. This helped me base the company’s philosophy on a high
level of service to the operator, with absolute priority of minimum downtime for the vehicle.
“Paul Hemp, our Managing Director, came from a parts supply background, and he soon fitted into this regime of
getting parts quickly, getting them fitted and getting the vehicle back on the road as soon as possible. It’s a
philosophy that’s been fundamental to Sherwood from day one, and I believe it’s paramount to our overall success.”

Fun Sized Fiorino

FIAT GO FUN-SIZE WITH FIORINO

It’s got the looks, versatility and it’s great value for money. The brand new Fiat Fiorino, available from Sherwood Truck and Van – the leading commercial-vehicle dealer in the Midlands – has been carefully created to make life on the road easy and fun, whatever industry you’re in.
Sherwood’s expert sales team at the Nottingham-based Fiat dealership can fulfil all customers’ needs, offering test drives, explaining the different specifications available on the van and discussing the many finance options available. Sales Executive, Jordan Hill, believes the Fiorino is ideal for smaller businesses, such as florists, sandwich deliverers, plumbers, painters and decorators, all wanting to take their products or services mobile.
“I’m very excited about the new Fiat Fiorino,” says Jordan. ”Its modern aesthetics combined with Fiat’s unrivalled Multijet engine make it unique in its versatility and reliability. It drives very similar to a car and is the perfect step up to a van for those who’ve never driven a commercial vehicle before. There’s a tight turning circle, for instance, making it easier to park. Plus it has exceptional security benefits, making it a safe and comfortable vehicle for men or women.”
Despite being the second smallest van in the Fiat Professional range, the Fiorino also has the option of sliding side access – making loading quick and simple for inner city deliveries. And it’s deceivingly spacious, too, with a maximum load capacity of 2.8m3.What’s more, the passenger seat can be folded to allow a maximum length of 2491 mm.
Of course, when you become a Sherwood customer, you’re not just purchasing a great vehicle. With dealerships covering
Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Staffordshire and South Cheshire, Sherwood offer 24-hour servicing and parts availability – rare for car-derived van dealerships. Yet this is a lifeline for all businesses. After all, if your car breaks down, you can expect to wait a few days before it’s fixed. Inconvenient, yes. But if it happens to a vehicle you use for business, it’s a disaster – especially if that business relies on just one van.
The answer? You’re better off buying from a commercial-vehicle dealer rather than a car dealer. “Most car dealers are open 8am to 5.30pm, and are often closed at weekends,” adds Jordan. “At Sherwood, you can drop your vehicle off on a Tuesday night and it’ll be serviced and back on the road ready to be picked up on Wednesday morning.”
Sherwood’s Nottingham site offers four other Fiat van models, which only add to Sherwood’s growing reputation as a wellestablished dealership, with a line-up of vehicles now ranging from the very small – such as the Fiat Punto – to the very large...to 44-tonne Iveco Stralis tractor units.
Derwent Truck Show

SHERWOOD LEAD THE WAY AT DERWENT TRUCK SHOW
Charity begins at home, as Sherwood join forces with local truck industry to help give new hope for eight-year-old Edward.

As main sponsors of the second Derwent Truck Show on 28th-29th June, Sherwood Truck and Van helped raise £2,500 for a very worthy cause. Eight-year-old Edward Bright lost all four limbs below the elbow and knee after suffering from meningitis. Now back at school in Ripley, Derbyshire, Edward is working towards living a normal life like any young child, and the money raised at the show for the Edward Bright Appeal will go towards buying him a set of new limbs.
Together with his twin brother, Edward was picked up in a vehicle of his choice and taken on a scenic route via Derbyshire\'s towns and villages to the show in Ambergate. A convoy of vehicles, including Sherwood\'s striking Iveco All Blacks Stralis and Trakker, took part in the procession, stopping traffic to the sound of beeping horns along the way. Not surprisingly, Edward loved every minute of it, and once at the showground, the boys were presented with a large model lorry.
The idea for the Derwent Truck Show came about when local truck event commentator Dave Whittle, together with other local truck companies, decided to arrange a Derbyshire-based truck show to celebrate the local transport industry and raise money for charitable causes. All manner of different-shaped, sized and aged models of vehicle were on show over the weekend, not least a varied collection of classic and vintage cars and motorcycles, and a selection of steam engines.
Sherwood proudly displayed two new vehicles on their stand – the Euro 5 Stralis and the Euro 5 Trakker. And both – in striking black, displaying the New Zealand All Blacks’ unmistakable logo – made an impact on the Derbyshire skyline, attracting plenty of interest. Other vehicles on the Sherwood stand included the Iveco Daily tipper and the newly relaunched Fiat Fiorino, alongside the full collection of Fiat commercial vehicles.
If you missed the show and would like to view Sherwood\'s range of Iveco and Fiat Commercial vehicles, Sherwood not only offer 24-hour servicing and parts, they boast depots covering Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Staffordshire and South Cheshire. Simply call 01773 863311 and a member of the sales team will be happy to arrange a test drive or a temporary loan of a demonstrator vehicle.

Fiorino Wins Award

FIORINO IS INTERNATIONAL VAN OF THE YEAR 2009

Fiat’s new Fiorino has been named the International Van of the Year 2009 – with 112 points out of a possible 140 – by a jury consisting of journalists from 20 European countries, specialists in the commercial vehicles sector.

The prestigious trophy was awarded to Franco Miniero, representing Fiat Professional, during a ceremony at the 62nd International Show in Hanover, the biggest exhibition in
Europe
for commercial and industrial vehicles.

The award recognises the many important novelties on the Fiat Fiorino, a unique vehicle in its genre, created to meet the needs of those who require a compact van which is cheap to run, nimble in traffic and handy in parking manoeuvres.

The new Fiorino is intended to redefine the standards of the 1B segment and play a leading role in the light commercial vehicles market. The jury of the International Van of the Year particularly liked the fact that the Fiorino is creating a new market segment. Over the last few decades, light commercial vehicles have evolved in their load capacity, leaving a gap at the lower end of the range.

Thanks to Fiorino, customers in this segment have the opportunity to buy a vehicle “made-to-measure” for their work and activities. With a load-carrying capacity of 610 and 660 kg, volume of 2.5 cubic metres, internal length of 1.5 metres (which become 2.8 m3 and 2.5 metres with the passenger seat folded down), the Fiorino fully meets these requirements.

According to the jury, the new Fiat Fiorino is a truly innovative product in terms of its dimensions, style, safety content and environmental friendliness. This well designed van is very practical and excellent value for money; its economical features met the jury’s most important criterion of merit, i.e. the capacity of a vehicle to offer an efficient contribution to goods transport by road.

Born out of the industrial collaboration between Fiat Group Automobiles and PSA, Fiorino is manufactured at the Tofas factory in Bursa () and is sold in about 80 countries around the world.

Distinguished by an original and dynamic style, the Fiat Fiorino is 3.86 metres long, 1.72 high and 1.71 wide; its compact external dimensions with which any city centre can be negotiated with ease, are also enhanced by a turning circle of just 9.95 metres.

Fiat Fiorino offers a complete range of versions and features: vans for goods transport; Combi for mixed transport of people and goods; Adventure versions with raised ground clearance, and shortly also with a special drive system for use in rural areas and on low-grip surfaces; robotised 6-speed gearbox; and innovative safety systems, such as ESP. Fiat Fiorino will subsequently also be available either with electric power or a compressed natural gas (CNG) engine.

Safe and reliable, the Fiorino also offers excellent dynamic behaviour, whatever the use or type of journey. This is achieved by the two power units – the 73 bhp 1.4 petrol and the 75 bhp 1.3 MultiJet turbodiesel (also available with particulate filter) – which are a pleasure to drive, reliable and environmentally friendly, and also offer very low running costs (consumption and maintenance). In particular, the 1.3 MultiJet permits a range of 600 miles on a full tank of diesel (62.7 mpg for the combined cycle), and has CO2 emissions of only 119 g/km, the best-in-class value in the segment. The oil change frequencies for both engines are 18,000 miles (or 24 months). The layout of the individual engine components has been designed to significantly reduce the time required for maintenance or repair.

The prestigious International Van of the Year 2009 award confirms the great appreciation given to the new Fiorino among European customers and the promise to “reach places where others can’t” – as claimed in Fiat’s advertising. In fact, since its launch last December until mid-September of this year, Fiorino has achieved a total of 28,000 orders for van and Combi versions.
